Hats off to Councilmember Tony Cardenas, Bertha Velazquez (Councilman's Assistant), and many others especially volunteers for making Deafestival a roaring success! It was a beautiful day and we were glad to have our WRAD booth there since many people visited our booth to pick up Deaf and Hard of Hearing Awareness 6 Flags Magic Mountain flyers for Saturday October 11th as well as WRAD is proudly presented an Halloween Mexican Riviera Cruise from October 26th through November 2nd, 2008. The Deafestival event was at Woodley Park in Van Nuys and it was really a lovely park with some trees perfect for shades from the hot sun. Also, they provided a big white tent. The event was complied with ADA and provided equal accessible for everyone including wheelchairs, five Sign Language Interpreters, and two Real-time Captioners. It had variety of free activities, art workshops, theatrical performances, and information booths.
There were lot of children activities such as moon bounce, rock climbing, outdoor laser tag, art and craft. The Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles Fire Department got involved with the community event to explore and show off their police cars, SUVs, and fire trucks.
David Kurs was the Master of Ceremonies. The Miss Deaf California pageant was presented and the audiences gave a loud applause wishing her the best of luck to win the Miss Deaf USA Pageant. The performance had magician, comedians, poetry, and signed singers.
It was nice of Councilman Tony Cardenas to send us a letter giving support to WRAD to participate in Deafestival this year. Last year he gave us a beautiful plaque.
Councilman Tony Cardenas strongly encouraged members of the deaf community, sign language students and their friends to spread the words about attending Deafestival next year! Every year the event is growing bigger. Of course, it is absolutely free.
We fully support Councilman Tony Cardenas for his work to have Deafestival and we at WRAD are grateful to help him by continuing to work with him on his committee next year to make Deafestival even better!
